What Is Transpersonal Counselling?
Can be distinguished from many other forms of counselling by working and utilising the whole self, not just parts of self, this is inclusive of the physical, emotional, mental and the spiritual components of life.
Transpersonal Counselling is a holistic approach which values the entire person. Talking, thinking, meaning and purpose, feeling and expressing emotions and creating strategies can all be a part of the process. The work can move beyond the personal lessons to the spiritual lessons through to the unconscious and conscious aspects of self.
The Transpersonal model includes various ways of being and functioning within the expansive inner concepts of transcendent enlightenment and being able to connect with this higher intelligence and wisdom. The focus is associated with developing our fullest potential as human beings.
Crisis, illness and personal life challenges are placed within this larger context of growth.
Our life challenges are an integral part of the process of becoming, not just symptoms we need to remove in order to return to our lives as they were before. They represent the learnings and lessons we are here to work on. Once we move through a particular process of our healing journey we can become more awakened, alive and whole more than we were before our challenges in life began.
Recognising and Experiencing Different States of Consciousness
An important element in the Transpersonal map of the human being is understanding we exist within a spectrum of consciousness. Meaning, there is a wide range of possible ways that we can experience ourselves and our realities. An ordinary day consists of many shifts in states, from sleeping and dreaming to the cognitive realm of thinking and planning, to the imaginative realm of daydream or contemplation, to the embodied experience of vigorous exercise, to being intimate, to depression, anxiety, peak experiences of oneness with the universe, and endless other possibilities. It’s important to realise that each state has its own qualities, potentials and resources.
The Transpersonal approach understands this and seeks to use this knowledge for the benefit of the person. There is a science and process to accessing particular states. The Transpersonal Counsellor is someone who has been trained in guiding others to access specific states for the purposes of healing. The counselling tools and techniques used are sourced from modern psychology, traditional spiritual practices and of course the practitioner’s own experience in life. Simple examples include meditation, guided visualization and deep cognitive and emotional endurance.
Working with a Transpersonal Counsellor
The Transpersonal approach is highly compatible to people for whom spirituality is an important and valued aspect of their lives, including those who don’t necessarily identify as being “spiritual” but have a strong relationship with personal and moral growth and want to connect with life’s own meaning and purpose.
When an individual seeks a counsellor who doesn’t reflect these parts of them, they have a tendency to to feel they are only exploring a small part of what is happening for them and this can result in feeling disconnected and more alone.
Transpersonal Counselling is a good fit for those individuals who may be undergoing personal challenges regarding meaning or purpose and want to integrate their whole self. When understanding how to use your personal power naturally creates a freedom of self within.
The Transpersonal approach is very supportive for those who see their relationships as vehicles for their personal and spiritual growth and are committed to being as conscious in their relationships as possible. The greatest and most important relationship we will ever experience, is the relationship we have with our self. The relationship with self becomes an insightful and reflective tool in understanding our relationship with others.
The Transpersonal model has come together as a collection of influences from various sources, not just any particular individual. As such, there may be varying definitions of Transpersonal Counselling that highlight different aspects of the approach. Within any model of therapeutic work, the approach of different Transpersonal Counsellors can vary greatly from person to person. Whilst finding the right counselling approach is important, probably more important is finding the right counsellor for you.
The Benefits of Transpersonal Counselling:
It is important to understand that counselling will only truly benefit when you are open to wanting to learn and are willing to make the necessary shifts and changes that can transform your life for the better.
This is a working relationship, meaning, it’s a two-way process and you will need to meet your therapist half way.
There is work you will be required to do, a call to action, this is what assists with the transformation.
If this is something you feel resonates with you and you feel you’re ready to embark on your journey of learning, I look forward to meeting and working with you!
